Crafting Your Own Tools

For many Wiccans and witches, it is important for them to make their own tools. Most of the tools used by witches are quite cheap and easy to make. I will provide a list of tools, how to make them, and links of great tutorials.

While an athame is traditionally made with an iron/steel blade and a black handle, some witches who are not experienced in metalworking make their athames differently. If you’d like to use a metal blade, you can use a premade blade. You can use blades from a knife, take off the handle, and make your own custom handle. If you’d rather work with a less sharpened blade, you can use a letter opener. You can also use a long crystal, flattened clay, or carved wood.

Tool - Book of Shadows

Book of Power
You could make your own grimoire or book of shadows pretty easily. You can do this with paper, board, card stock, and whichever binding you choose. There is a lot of measuring, so if you’re bad with numbers and math, it can be a tad difficult. When you make your own book, you have control over what your book is made of and how it’ll look. You can make your own paper and infuse each page with your own magick. You can also age your paper for a more authentic feel. My favorite part about making my own book of power was the fact that I could make it whatever size, however thick, and whichever binding I wanted for my book.

Bowls are very useful; they can be used to hold crystals, herbs, and other small items. Bowls can be molded from salt dough and clays, or carved from wood, or even forged from metals. Offering bowls made from all natural ingredients can be buried or broken and scattered with the rest of the offerings. When making bowls for water and salt, use clay and finish is a glaze. Bowls can even be made from items in nature, like turtle shells, animal skulls, and bird nests.

Brooms and besoms come in a variety of sizes and have a variety of purposes. The smaller brooms and besoms would need to be made out of thinner, more pliable materials; while some of the bigger, or full size ones can be made with thicker, stiffer materials.

Tool - Besom

Handmade candles are easy to make and there are quite a few different ways to make them. There are a few options for wicks; cotton, paper, wood, and hemp. Regarding the candle itself, the options for the wax are a little more vast. You can use beeswax, soy wax, oils, and even crayons. When making candles, you can add scents, dyes, herbs, essential oils, and more to customize the candles for more specific purposes.

Candle Holder
There are a few different options when making a candle holder. You can carve wood logs, mold clay, or you can decorate a pre-made holder. The best way to make a candle holder with clay or salt dough is to roughly mold the dough or clay into the shape you want it, sprinkle cornstarch on the top where the candle will go and on the bottom of the candle, slowly stick the candle in, and finish molding the holder. You should leave the candle in the holder until it is dry. If the clay or dough needs to be baked, you should move the candle around until the area where the candle goes in is a tad loose. Remove the candle and bake accordingly.

Making your own incense is relatively cheap and easy to do. The reason so many witches make their own is because it’s easy to gather the ingredients to have certain magickal properties and simple to make your own custom scent. The easiest way to make incense is to make loose incense and burn it with charcoal. Making incense cones is also quite simple. Making incense sticks can be a bit difficult, but you can buy scent-less sticks, and add your own oils or liquid scents to them pretty easily.

Incense Holder/Burner
Incense holders and burners are quite easy to make. You can make little bowls for cones by using some of the same tutorials for bowls, although adding a metal base, or a fire resistant coating is your best choice. Incense stick burners  can be made from a variety of different materials. Clay, wood, salt dough, metal. You’ll want to add a hole at an angle for you stick to go into. This can be done easily by using a nail, or an incense stick covered in cornstarch. If you will be using wood, it is always recommended that you add a fire resistant coating to prevent fire.

Pendulums are generally quite easy to make, as it is really only an object on the end of a string. When making your pendulum, you’ll want to make sure that whatever you are using for the string or chain, is flexible and easy to move around. Since a stiff pendulum is less likely to work properly. There are a multitude of items that you can use for the end bit of your pendulum. Pieces of metal, stones and crystals, and charms are the most commonly found. You will want to make sure that whatever is on the end is heavy enough to keep the cord taut, but light enough to not break it.

The pentacle is a tool that could be made out of almost anything. Many witches who make their own altar tile pentacles use clay and salt dough. These are the easiest to make. If you have a mold and a way to liquify metal, you can make your own with molten metals. Quite a few of the larger pentacles and altar plaques are carved or etched into wood. Some of the smaller pentacles, like ones used for necklaces and charms are made from wrapped wires. For a fun craft for children, pentacles can be made with hoops (for embroidery or dream catchers) and ribbons.

Tool - Runes

Runes are usually made from stones, crystals, and wood. For beginners, or those afraid to mess up, glass pebbles are easily obtainable and make for decent beginner runes. You can draw on glass with a permanent marker, and use a clear nail polish to keep the color from fading. When using stones and crystals, you should make sure they are all relatively the same size. You can customize the stones, by painting them before you add the symbols. When working with wooden runes, you can cut a branch to make short cylinder pieces then use a dremel tool to burn the symbols onto your runes. Some witches use sticks, or animal teeth and bones. You can even make runes out of clay or salt dough for a cheaper alternative.

Scrying Mirror
Scrying mirrors are very cheap and simple to make. These can be made by purchasing a picture frame and painting the inside of the glass with black paint. You can make more advanced scrying mirrors by putting black, or black painted items, behind the glass. Another way of making a scrying mirror would be to paint to front side of a regular mirror black, then scratch off some of the paint to reveal some (but only very little) of the mirror. You would use this kind of scrying mirror in a dark room with a candle lit. Some witches have even been known to use shadow boxes with candles in them as scrying mirrors. If you own any pure black stones, like obsidian or black tourmaline, as long as it has a flat surface, you can also use this as a scrying mirror.

Talismans, amulets, and charms are one of the most commonly self made items. Even people who are not witches make and use these. An amulet is a talisman that brings protection and safe travels. Amulets are usually worn as a necklace and have sigils, symbols, and animals carved into them. A charm is a talisman that brings luck, and when made, usually have a chant said to give it it’s power. Charms are usually small and can be made from anything.

Tarot Cards
Many witches make their own tarot cards. They do this for a few different reasons; they want to further their tarot knowledge, they have problems understanding the symbolism, or simply because they want to feel more connected to their deck. When making your own tarot deck, it is important to know about each of the card’s meanings and symbolism. If you will be drawing your deck by hand, you can buy blank tarot cards. If you have a printer/scanner, it is recommended that you draw your cards on full size paper, scan it, shrink it down to size, then print it. If you do it this way, you get a more detailed card. You can also draw or make a collage on your computer with a drawing program and print it.

Wands, Rods, Staang, Staffs
Wands, rods, staang, and staffs are all different, but are also the same, as they all direct energy. Wands are shorter than a foot, have at least one pointed end, and have many ways of being made. Wands can be made from carved sticks, molded clay, or even chop sticks. Rods are longer than a foot, but shorter than a yard. These can be made from sticks and short pipes. Staffs are longer than three feet and are usually carried similar to walking sticks and canes. These can be made from sticks, canes, and poles. Staang can be any size, have two points on one end, and are usually made from antlers and sticks. When using wood, the magickal properties of the wood is quite important. When collecting the wood, you should look for fallen branches. If you find a branch that is still on a tree, give an offering and thanks to the tree before taking the branch. You can embellish these with paint, crystals, beads, ribbons, or anything else you can think of.
